Causes of Acid Reflux Disease

May 24, 2008 by Tammy · 1 Comment

causes of acic reflux diseaseAcid reflux disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition in which stomach acid and stomach contents regurgitate back up into the esophagus from the stomach when the LES, lower esophageal sphincter relaxes allowing the backflow.

The cause of acid reflux disease can be related to something as simple as a spicy meal or more complex such as a hiatal hernia. Remember, acid reflux is not just your basic case of heartburn, it is more serious. If left untreated acid reflux disease can lead to more serious medical conditions including erosion of the esophagus and so it is very important to learn how to manage acid reflux disease before long term damage occurs.

However, the good news is that acid reflux disease can be easily managed with changes in lifestyle. Some of the causes of acid reflux disease may be food related such as alcohol, coffee and tea; although there are some current thoughts that perhaps this may not be true.

Spicy foods do seem to cause an increase in stomach pain and other symptoms associated with GERD, however, spicy foods do not actually cause acid reflux disease. Other causes of acid reflux disease may be related to eating large, fatty meals, lying down immediately following a meal and even obesity.

It is easy to understand that if these things are known to cause acid reflux disease then avoiding these things should help to provide relief from acid reflux disease. Persistent heartburn which occurs two or more days a week, despite treatment and diet changes, could be the result of acid reflux disease.

Determining the cause of acid reflux disease is important when trying to find the best choice for treating this irritating stomach problem. Work with your physician for an accurate diagnosis and then together you can develop a strong treatment plan designed just for you.

Wart Removal and Treatment

How do you get rid of warts?

Getting rid of warts is a very common question as millions of people are affected by some type of wart on their body. It is also a question that is yet to be answered with 100% certainty by doctors today.

Warts have long been a common problem for people every where and after much research and testing, we are all still not able to discover how to get rid of warts for good.

For the most part warts are not usually all that serious a problem. The problem is that they are not pretty to look at and they can certainly spread to other parts of your body, but there is little chance of them causing any serious harm or damage.

There are several different varieties of warts you can get such as:

Flat Warts - These are the small and round warts. This type of wart can spread very easily. Avoid scratching or picking at these warts and the area around them. Flat warts are most common on the face and on the legs. The problem and difficulty with this type of wart is that they can sometimes generate in large groups of them at once.

Plantar Warts - These are the warts that generally appear on the bottom your foot (the plantar fasciitis area of the foot). However, they can also set in on the palm of your hand and fingers as well. These warts can become irritating and even quite painful as they develop because of their location and your body weight is being pressed against them when you either stand or walk.

Genital Warts - These warts are the most undesirable of all warts simply because of the location of them on your body. You can contract genital warts by engaging in sexual contact with someone affected with genital warts.

So, how do I get rid of my warts?

Because warts are such a common problem there are many different methods and theories that have been developed for getting rid of warts.

Certainly the quickest and most effective way in ridding yourself of warts is to make an appointment with your doctor or dermatologist and have them treated or removed directly. Again, this is the easiest and quickest way of all.

Avoid contact with it - Many times a bothersome wart will disappear on its own. Certainly this is not the quickest way to relieve yourself of the wart nor would it be the most successful way either, because trying to wait the wart out just may not happen.

It is important to note that if you do have a wart(s) try to avoid contact with it such as rubbing or scratching it as you will increase the chances of it spreading or becoming larger. And if this happens then obviously there is less chance of becoming wart free anytime soon.

Keep as dry as possible - Environmentally speaking, warts are more likely to generate in a damp environment, especially plantar warts, try to keep your feet and toes as dry as you can and there will be less chance of a wart finding an environment on you to grow in.

If you have the problem with warts that are spreading or seem to be multiplying or you have a wart that in unusually large or discolored, you should contact your doctor/dermatologist as soon as possible. If you develop genital warts, you certainly should contact your doctor and do not try to treat these yourself.

There are many more ways in which you can fight warts than is allowed by the scope of this article. Currently there is no cure or ultimate prevention from getting any of the various types of warts, but many treatments to rid yourself of warts are quite effective.

As with any type of conditions that affects your body and potentially your health, the best advice is to consult with your primary care physician or your dermatologist if you have one. If you don’t yet have a dermatologist your doctor may very well refer you to one so you can get the proper and most effective treatment for the type of wart that you have.

Snoring and Sleep Disorders

May 23, 2008 by Tammy · Leave a Comment

Snoring is no stranger to almost half the world’s population. That’s quite an impressive statistic. Some people snore less than others while many suffer from chronic snoring.

Snoring can be more that just a nuisance or an annoyance to anyone else trying to sleep within ear shot. Some studies even indicate that snoring can, in fact be linked to sleep apnea and even health conditions such as high blood pressure, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and type II diabetes.

Snoring (the sounds) essentially is a result of an obstruction to the free flow of air. This obstruction causes the soft tissue to vibrate thus producing the snoring sounds.

With adult snoring there are a variety of causes including a stuffy nasal passage, a deviated septum, a thick soft palate, enlarged tonsils, adenoids, and more.

A side effect of sleep apnea in an adult is snoring. With sleep apnea the person will stop breathing any where from 10 to 30 seconds. This can occur several times during the course of the night and it results in a deprivation of oxygen to the entire body. The lack of sound sleep and oxygen to a person suffering from this will adversely affect the body.

The affects of sleep apnea will eventually snowball into a feeling of always feeling tired and fatigued, along with being irritable, a loss in productivity, overall poor mental health, and even weaken the immune system.

Staying fit with a regular exercise program will help lessen the chances of you snoring… as well as help you lose some weight. Avoid sedatives and antihistamines if you suffer from mild or occasional snoring. Sleeping on your side will also help keep your breath-way open and lessen your snoring, also elevation your body from the waist up just a few inches will also help with mild cases of snoring.

With chronic or excessive adult snoring you may need to consult with your doctor and get a medical examination to determine the best steps.

The range of medical treatments for snoring vary from the simple such as a non-invasive orthodontic appliance to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) to a more complex treatment such as Laser Assisted Uvula Palatoplasty (LAUP).

Both of these types of treatments are a step beyond the more traditional treatments for snoring and would only be used under the advice and care of your doctor if more tradition remedies simply did not work.

Sleep Disorders Help

May 23, 2008 by Tammy · Leave a Comment

Sleep disorders affect at least 40 million Americans each year.

Sleep disorders cause sleep deprivations which interfere with work, driving, and social activities.  It is estimated that 16 billion dollars in medical cost each year are due to sleep disorders.  The most common sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and Narcolepsy.

Insomnia is the feeling that you have not slept due to frequently waking up during the night or waking up early and being unable to get back to sleep.  Most everyone occasionally suffers from short term insomnia.  Insomnia affects job performance and well being the next day.  Sleeping pills are usually prescribed but often stop working after several weeks.

Sleep apnea is another type of sleep disorder.   This is where breathing is interrupted during sleep.  This sleep disorder usually occurs with fat build up or loss of muscle tone with aging allowing the windpipe to collapse during breathing when muscles relax during sleep.  This problem called obstructive sleep apnea and is normally associated with loud snoring.

Due to the collapse of the windpipe, the air flow is blocked from 10 seconds to a minute while the person sleeping struggles to breathe.  This causes the blood oxygen level to fall causing the brain to respond by awakening the person enough to open the wind pipe.  This cycle may be repeated 100 of times a night leaving the person continually sleepy.

Another sleep disorder is called restless leg syndrome.  This is where there is a sensation of unpleasant crawling, prickling, or tingling sensation in the legs giving an urge to move them for relief.

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that affects 250,000 Americans.  Narcolepsy causes frequent “sleep attacks” that can last from several seconds to more than 30 minutes.  This sleep disorder is usually hereditary.  Once diagnosed, medications can help control the symptoms and prevent dangerous situations due to falling asleep at improper times.

Sleep disorders, whether caused by physical or mental factors, can be treated or managed once they are properly diagnosed.  If you are suffering from a sleep disorder, make an appointment to see your doctor.

Should I Try Hair Restoration

May 23, 2008 by Tammy · Leave a Comment

Well there you are and you’ve got half the amount of hair you had 10 years ago.

What a crummy thing related to aging!

So is hair restoration the only solution there is left if you want to revitalize your thinning hair? When approaching the topic of hair loss the main thing to remember are just the basics.

One important basic to remember is that hair loss is a natural part of aging. Yes, as you get older, for most people, hair DOES fall out.

You must accept it. Thinning hair is a known fact of aging just as are wrinkles. There’s no way to avoid it so get rid of that hat you use to hide the evidence and face the facts.

Secondly, you need to discover if you even need or want hair restoration. The main way to figure this out is to think back to your younger days. “Come on, everyone else is doing it.”

As you get older be sure to remember that just because many other people choose hair restoration doesn’t mean that it is right for you. If you are not mentally or emotionally attached to your hair then let it fall out. For some bald is steamy hot! If you do not think that people will judge you based on the contents of your scalp then let fate take its course and embrace the chrome dome.

However, many who have had to deal with hair loss do choose restoration to fix their problem. Some assume that they appear more professional when they have a full head of hair versus a bald head or one that is simply thinning heavily. Either way, it is completely a personal decision. You must do the research and find out what so of hair restoration treatment is right for you.

There is no right or wrong answer. Some people view it as an unnecessary cosmetic procedure while other say that it keeps their moral high. No matter, the course you choose, hair restoration is always an option. So read up on the facts, talk with your physician and decide if hair restoration is for you.

Head lice can make for a huge annoyance and even more that a bit embarrassing in your life.

You may have some questions regarding the little pests.

Ridding yourself or a family member isn’t a complex process but there are a few common questions that many people have, so let’s take a look and we’ll answer a few of the more commonly asked questions regarding head lice to clear things up for you.

Can I get infested with head lice from my pet?

Since head lice are unable to feed off of animals, needing exclusively human blood to survive, the odds are that these critters evolved with us over thousands of years.

There are other types of lice that feed off of animals; however they are unable to feed off of humans. One thing that we do know is that they’ve been around for a long, long time.

Should I spray my house when there is a head lice outbreak?

Actually, contrary to popular belief, it can actually be a bad idea to have your house sprayed when someone in it has lice. Not only is there a possibility that the sprays that are used be harmful to you and your family, chances are these same spray will do little to prevent a re-infestation.

Since head lice can only live on human hosts, if they are separated from their host for more than 24 hours, they will die. For this reason alone, you just need to be concerned of person to person contact. For example, ensure that you are not sharing pillows or bed linens during infestation. Along with lice treatments such as ‘Nix’, you can easily rid your household of the problem without paying for harmful and unnecessary pesticides.

Are there any harmless ways of removing lice?

Most of the solutions that are used to rid a head of lice involve harmful pesticides which can be damaging to you and your family. If you want to clear up the infestation with as little toxicity as possible, your best bet is to remove all the lice and nits by hand and mechanical means.

Have two people comb over the infected person’s hair, wearing gloves. When you find nits, the eggs of the head louse, use distilled white vinegar to loosen their natural adhesive and remove them from the hair follicle. If you go through this procedure every day until you find no lice or nits for two weeks, you’ve likely successfully removed the lice problem.

Another method of destroying lice that some people have found to be effective is the use of a common household hair dryer. By heating the lice to a sufficient degree, you’ll be able to kill them off. Howerver, great care should be taken as to not burn or otherwise irritate the scalp.

Will water and shampoo kill head lice?

Water won’t kill lice and neither will ordinary shampoo. They will withstand both without a problem.

Armed with just a bit of common knowledge about head lice; you’ll be better suited to deal with a head lice infestation should one arise.

Pregnancy Test

May 23, 2008 by Tammy · Leave a Comment

It used to take weeks to get the results of a pregnancy test, and then for many years it at least took some lab work that took hours and even days to get back, but now with the convenience of home pregnancy tests, it’s as easy is ever to find out if you are in a pregnant state!

The wait used to be long and stressful because it regarded such an important event – the birth of a child. Today, you can have the answer in mere minutes after a visit to the store to purchase a home pregnancy test.

Home pregnancy tests are very similar to the ones carried out by professional labs; however they for consumer use and can be used in the convenience of your own home.

Both the lab and home pregnancy test check for the presence and level of a hormone called hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in blood or urine. Blood samples are considered more reliable, but usually not someone’s first choice (for obvious reasons). Home pregnancy tests use urine to check the levels of the hCG.

The two main criteria for a successful in-home pregnancy test are readability and sensitivity.

Readability is partly a subjective issue, though some tests are definitely easier to interpret than others. Some tests show you a number to compare to while others match a color strip against a result sheet. Many, these days, just say ‘Pregnant’ or ‘Not Pregnant’ in some form, easy for you to understand. Some use the “blue line” which appears in the window if you are pregnant. Which test you choose depends largely on personal taste and the end result will likely be the same so don’t fret over it too much.

One major component of the reliability score is as much in the two criteria as in the quality of the test. As tests have become more and more sensitive, the level of false positives has a tendency to go up. For example, women who have recently given birth or miscarried may have elevated levels of hCG present even when they are not pregnant. Certain medications can increase the level as well.

When these factors are considered it is possible to receive falsified results, which of course could be very frustrating.

Yes a home pregnancy test can provide you with a quick and reliable answer to the question you desperately want answered most. So don’t stay in the dark, if you are wondering if you are pregnant, then purchase a home pregnancy test and get started so that you can find out the answer you’re looking for.
